HC Deb 03 November 1992 vol 213 cc206-13W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if she will list by grade and number employed the staffing costs for the year 1991–92 and the estimate for 1992–93 for the Employment Service.

Mr. McLoughlin

Responsibility for the subject of the question has been delegated to the Employment Service agency under its chief executive. I have asked him to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from M. Fogden to Mr. Martin Redmond, dated 3 November 1992:

As the Employment Service is an Executive Agency, the Secretary of State has asked me to write to you direct to respond to your Parliamentary Question asking for a list by grade and number employed, the staffing costs for the year 1991/92 and the estimate for 1992–93 for the Employment Service. This is something which falls within the responsibilities delegated to me as the Chief Executive of the Agency.

The number of staff employed by the Employment Service has increased steadily over the last eighteen months. Whilst the overall staff usage is monitored monthly average figures by grade are not produced. A detailed count of staff is carried out annually on 1 April and I am enclosing two sets of tables showing the Employment Service staff in post by grade at the 1 April 1991 and the 1 April 1992.

During the 1991–92 financial year the Employment Service spent just over £525 million on salaries. The salary allocation for 1992/93 is £624 million.

As decided by the Administrative Committee of the House of Commons, Chief Executive replies to written Parliamentary Questions will now be published in the Official Report. I will also place a copy of this letter in the Library of the House.
