To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many people were employed in the coal industry(a)in 1987 and (b)at the latest available date.

Mr. McLoughlin

There were 62,000 employees in employment in coal extraction and solid fuels in Great Britain in August 1992, the latest date for which information is available. This compares with 142,000 people in August 1987.
