Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretaru of State for Scotland how many people were employed in manufacturing in Scotland in 1979; and how many there are at the present time.

Mr. Stewart

In June 1979, there were an estimated 604,000 employees employed in manufacturing in Scotland. In June 1992, the latest date for which information is available, this figure was 368,000. Both of these figures are taken from the civilian work force in employment estimates complied by the Employment Department.

Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what(a) percentage and (b) numbers of employees in manufacturing in Scotland were in (i) home-owned firms and (ii) overseas-owned firms in 1979; and what are the percentages at the present time.

The information requested is given in the table. The latest year for which such information is available is 1990.
