HL Deb 20 May 1992 vol 537 c42WA
Lord Judd

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether assistance will be provided for the rehabilitation of ports at Beira, Dar es Salaam, Maputo and Lobito and for additional inland transport and transport management.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Chalker of Wallasey)

Britain is providing considerable support for the rehabilitation and development of ports and inland transport routes in Southern Africa, including over £17 million for the development of Maputo Port and £1.27 million for the rehabilitation of Beira Port. We are giving no rehabilitation assistance to Lobito or Dar es Salaam ports, but we are providing £5.47 million for repair and rehabilitation of the port at Tanga in Tanzania. Our assistance for inland transport routes includes £31.5 million for rehabilitation of the Limpopo and Nacala railways in Mozambique, and £14 million for the northern transport corridor linking southern Malawi with Dar es Salaam. We have also offered technical assistance with specific aspects of drought management.
