HL Deb 19 May 1992 vol 537 c26WA
Lord Windlesham

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What additional resources in manpower and finance are being made available to the probation service to enable it to carry out its new responsibilities under the Criminal Justice Act 1991.

The Minister of State, Home Office (Earl Ferrers)

Planned central government support for probation service expenditure in 1992–93 is £290 million, an increase of nearly 26 per cent. over 1990–91 outturn figures. This provision allows for an increase of 560 staff in 1992–93, the majority of whom are intended to provide for the implementation of the Criminal Justice Act.

Further increases are planned and by 1994–95 a total of 1,077 extra staff will have been provided for the implementation of the Act.
