HC Deb 13 May 1992 vol 207 cc125-6W
19. Mr. Lord

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what plans he has to further reduce pollution in rivers and seas; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Maclean

The 1990 river quality survey published by the National Rivers Authority shows that around 90 per cent. of river length in England and Wales is of good or fair quality. The system of statutory water quality objectives which we will be introducing later this year will ensure that a real and sustained improvement in the quality of inland and coastal waters is achieved.
