HL Deb 10 March 1992 vol 536 c49WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What information they have concerning the number of persons who originate from East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza and are now detained by the Israeli authorities under (a) administrative detention (b) other forms of detention without charge or trial and (c) following sentence for political offences.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (The Earl of Caithness)

We believe that around 270 Palestinians are in administrative detention. There are in addition over 7,000 Palestinians held in Israeli Defence Force facilities, many of whom have been tried and sentenced or are awaiting trial. There are also around 5,000 Palestinians in Israeli civilian prisons, of whom around 650 are, according to the Israelis, there because of criminal offences. These are our best estimates. But other estimates vary.
