HL Deb 09 March 1992 vol 536 cc43-4WA
Lord Bethell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many Polish visitors to this country did not leave within the time allotted to them by immigration authorities in the years 1988 to 1991 inclusive; and

In the years 1988 to 1991 inclusive how many Polish visitors to this country were shown to have worked, contrary to the conditions imposed on their entry.

Earl Ferrers

Information is not available in the form requested. However, the number of Polish nationals who have been served with notices of intention to deport under Section 3(5)(a) of the Immigration Act 1971, for overstaying their leave to enter or remain, or for working in breach of the conditions attached to their leave, were as follows:

Overstayers Workers in breach of conditions
1988 2
1989 3 14
1990 52 36
1991 145 55

In addition, the following numbers of Polish nationals were detected as illegal entrants (including people who entered by deception):

Number
1988 17
1989 33
1990 57
1991 84

It would be possible only at disproportionate cost to say how many of these illegal entrants had also overstayed or worked in breach of the conditions attached to their leave.
