HC Deb 02 June 1992 vol 208 cc486-7W
Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what is the average increase in net weekly spending power of a man with two children of seven and 11 years and a non-working wife for each extra pound he earns if he increases his pay from(a) £100 to £110, (b) £110 to £120, (c) £120 to £130, (d) £130 to £140 and (e) £140 to £150 assuming he pays average rent and community charge.

Mr. Burt

The information requested is in the tables. The assumptions used are those in the published tax benefit model tables, a copy of which is available in the Library. Each family is assumed to pay the estimated 1991–92 average local authority rent of £26.03. Community charge is included at an illustrative level of £4.70 per week.

It should be noted that the results in the tables cannot reflect, except by chance, the actual circumstances of particular people and cannot claim to be representative of the population at large. The tables use illustrative rents and do not, therefore, reflect the full range of housing costs which people may face.
