To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will increase investment in public transport.

BR invested just over £1 billion in 1991–92, the highest figure in real terms for 30 years. In 1992–93 BR is expected to invest a similar amount. London Transport invested around £600 million in 1991–92 and is currently expected to invest over £1 billion in 1992–93, three times greater in real terms than the level of investment five years ago. Bus and light rail investment outside London is primarily the responsibility of the private sector and of local authorities.
