HL Deb 02 June 1992 vol 537 c59WA
Lord Donaldson of Kingsbridge

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many prisoners have died at their own hand so far this year, and of these (a) how many were remand prisoners; (b) how many were female prisoners; (c) how many were aged under 21; and (d) how many cases have resulted in suicide verdicts.

Earl Ferrers

As at 26th May, 16 prisoners died as a result of an act of deliberate self-harm during 1992. Of these, 12 were unsentenced, none was female and four were aged under 21 years. Inquests have so far been held on five of the deaths and the jury has returned a verdict of "killed himself" on three occasions.
