To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will bring forward proposals to set a mandatory fuel efficiency standard for vehicles.

No. The United Kingdom is already working with other member states of the European Community with a view to agreeing EC limits on emissions of carbon dioxide from motor vehicles. Bearing in mind the close correlation between CO2 and fuel consumption, the Government do not consider separate measures to be necessary to deal with fuel efficiency.
