§ Mr. Michael SpicerTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment whether, in considering designation within the terms of the Caravans Act 1966, he will make it his policy to approve an additional transit site for the county of Hereford and Worcester.
§ Sir George YoungMy right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State will consider applications for designation on a county or district-wide basis and must be satisfied that the criteria for designation have been met. It is for the county council to decide whether or not an additional transit site is needed in the county of Hereford and Worcester. In doing so, the county council will bear in mind the numbers of gipsies frequenting the area and they must satisfy my right hon. and learned Friend that adequate site provision has been made to meet the accommodation needs, within reason, of the gipsies who reside in or resort to the area.
