Mr. Wallace

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what representations he has received from the CBI in Scotland regarding the proposed Scottish environment protection agency; and if he will make a statement.

Sir Hector Monro

[holding answer 4th June 1992]: The Confederation of British Industry submitted on 8 April 1992 its response to the consultation paper on the proposals to create a Scottish environment protection agency. The confederation generally welcomed the proposals and offered helpful and constructive comments in a number of areas. A copy of its response has been placed today in the House Library.

More than 160 responses were received as a result of the consultation exercise and they are currently being considered. An announcement about the final shape of my right hon. Friend's proposals will be made later in the summer.
