HC Deb 16 July 1992 vol 211 c999W
Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the President of the Board of Trade if he will list the countries and projects, respectively, that won the European better environment awards for industry this year.

Mr. Maclean

I have been asked to reply.

First prizes this year went to: Good environmental management category—Techagri M, Srl, of Italy, for an integrated scheme, involving farmers and other sections of food production, that makes use of recycled by-products, to reduce greatly any need for chemical fertilisers. Clean technology category—Shell International Chemie Maatschappij BV, the Netherlands, for a catalytic system to clean up poisonous gaseous oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from industrial exhausts. Eco product category—Papeteries MatussiCre et Forest, of Lyon, for a technological breakthrough in recycled paper. Recovery of waste category—Hovione Socieda Quimica, of Portugal, for a treatment plant at an antibiotics factory to recover solvent waste chemicals. Highly recommended award winners were: Good environmental management—BP Exploration, UK, for the good management of its on-shore Southern England oil-field—Wytch Farm, Dorset. Clean technology category—A combined British entry from the University of York and Contract Chemicals Ltd. for a new form of catalyst based on clay that has large potential to improve, environmentally, a range of chemical processes. Eco product category—BP Chemicals, UK, for a new airfield runway de-icer that does no harm to fish or other life when it runs off into water-courses. Recovery of waste category-a process for recycling scrap motor car tyres into useful material, from the Dutch firm, Vredestein Icopro BV. Technology transfer category, for technologies that can be transferred to third world countries—the French operation, GPS Salt Producers and Organisation/Univers-Sel, that enables villagers in west Africa to recover salt without the need to burn timber.
