HL Deb 15 July 1992 vol 539 cc39-40WA
Lord Judd

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What will be the role of the Sustainable Development Commission established at Rio de Janeiro; and what action will they take to ensure agreement of this role by all concerned.

Lord Strathclyde

The Sustainable Development Commission will be the principal organ for monitoring the follow-up to the commitments made at the UN Conference on Environment and Development, and for considering emerging issues in this area. It will report to the UN General Assembly through the Economic and Social Council. The Prime Minister has the support of his EC colleagues for his proposal that the EC take the lead at the 1992 General Assembly on the establishment of the commission.
