HL Deb 15 July 1992 vol 539 cc24-5WA
Lord Renton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether in view of the lack of agreement with regard to prevention of further destruction of rainforests at the Rio Summit Meeting, they will initiate further discussion with the governments of those countries where rainforests grow.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

The Government support the Statement of Principles on the management of the world's forests agreed at the Rio Summit. We would like an international review process for the principles to be established and are working for that aim.

We will also continue our policy of maintaining a regular dialogue with the governments of countries containing rainforests, to encourage them to put their forest management onto a sustainable basis.
