HC Deb 14 July 1992 vol 211 cc666-7W
23. Mr. French

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the average life expectancy in the United Kingdom; and what figures she has for(a) life expectancy in 1979 and (b) the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development average.

Mr. Sackville

In 1990 the average life expectancy at birth in the United Kingdom was 72.8 years for men and 78.5 years for women. This compares with 70.1 and 76.2 years respectively in 1979.

Due to lack of information for certain countries an average figure for all OECD countries is not available. However, in 1989 the average life expectancy for men across 19 OECD countries was 72.8 years, and for women 79.2 years.
