Mr. Frank Field

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the average age of consultants at the time of appointment, for each specialty and for each category of merit award.

Dr. Mawhinney

[holding answer 10 July 1992]: The table gives the average median age of consultants a t first appointment and the average age at which consultants receive each category of distinction award by broad specialty group for the latest year for which information is available.
