HC Deb 13 July 1992 vol 211 cc496-7W
Sir Dudley Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department when he expects to announce the result of the inquiry into the conviction for murder of Michael Shirley.

Mr. Jack

Mr. Shirley's case is currently being considered in the light of a recently received police report and representations from his solicitor. I will write to my hon. Friend as soon as a decision has been reached.

Sir Dudley Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what action is being taken to end the hunger strike of Michael Shirley at Long Lartin prison.

Mr. Jack

The medical officer is closely monitoring Mr. Michael Shirley's condition in the prison hospital and, although he has refused food since 26 June, he is accepting liquids. Physically, he is stable and staff continue to counsel him to persuade him to end his protest.
