Mr. Mills

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport who are the members of the Medical Advisory Council who advise him on withdrawal of driving licences on medical grounds; and what are their qualifications.

Mr. Kenneth Carlisle

The Secretary of State is advised by a number of expert medical panels. I understand that the question specifically relates to the Secretary of State's honorary advisory panel on driving and disorders of the nervous system. Its membership and individuals' qualifications are:

  • Dr. C. J. Ear (Chairman)—Consultant Neurologist
  • Mr. J. G. Brice—Consultant Neurosurgeon
  • Dr. S. D. Shorvon—Consultant Neurologist
  • Dr. D. W. Chadwick—Consultant Neurologist
  • Dr. R. A. Cooper—Consultant Physician
  • Professor C. P. Warlow—Professor of Medical Neurology
  • Mr. A. E. Richardson—Consultant Neurosurgeon
  • Dr. M. J. Parsonage—Consultant Neurologist
  • Professor W. B. Jennett—Professor of Neurosurgery

The chairman is nominated by the president of the Royal College of Physicians and appointed by the Secretary of State.
