To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what proposals he has to improve the protection of lowland peat bogs and heathlands.

I refer the hon. Member to the answer given by my hon. Friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State to my right hon. Friend the Member for Taunton (Mr. Nicholson) on 7 July,Official Report, column 158.
Both habitat types are covered by annex I of the EC habitats directive. The means of implementing the directive and the scientific criteria for selecting sites are under consideration.
