HL Deb 20 January 1992 vol 534 c13WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps they and other governments are taking to ensure the lifting of the embargo on food and fuel for the Kurdish areas of north Iraq imposed some two months ago by the authorities in Baghdad.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (The Earl of Caithness)

We maintain a coalition force in Southern Turkey to deter any renewed Iraqi repression of the civilian population in Northern or Southern Iraq. We are monitoring developments carefully, including the progress of discussions between Kurdish representations and the Iraqi government about the partial economic blockade. We have made clear that we will take necessary action if Iraq is shown to be renewing systematic repression of its people in breach of SCR 688.
