§ Lord Hollickasked Her Majesty's Government:
The number of persons in the UK suffering from dementia in 1979 and in 1991; and the number of continuing care beds available in the National Health Service for dementia sufferers in both years.
§ The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health (Baroness Hooper)Current scientific evidence suggests that about 7 per cent. of people aged 65 years and over and about 13 per cent. of people aged 75 years and over suffer from dementia to a significant degree.
There are no figures on the number of beds available for dementia sufferers, as such patients utilise beds in several medical specialties, including geriatric, mental illness and general medicine.
