§ Mr. John PattenGovernment action in recent years has been directed towards tackling rape and domestic violence. In the light of Home Office research studies, which provided fresh insight into the nature of these crimes, we have taken a number of steps. We have issued guidance to the police on how to improve their response; we have strengthened the powers of the courts to punish offenders and to protect victims; and we have encouraged local agencies to work together to provide help and support to women who are victims of violent or sexual crimes.
