Mr. Galbraith

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give for each year since 1974 the numbers of patients on hospital in-patient waiting lists at 31 March.

For any individual patient, the waiting time is more significant than the number of patients on the waiting list. The key to reducing waiting times is to increase the number of patients treated. Measured by discharges this has increased by 24 per cent. since 1979. The waiting list has been reduced by 21 per cent. over the same period.
