HL Deb 05 February 1992 vol 535 cc13-4WA
Lord McIntosh of Haringey

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What they estimate would be the cost in a full year (at 1991–92 prices) of operating their proposed council tax benefit taper at:

  1. (a) 15 per cent. instead of the proposed 20 per cent.;
  2. (b) 10 per cent. instead of the proposed 20 per cent.

Lord Henley

The annual cost of operating a taper of 15 per cent. under council tax benefit, instead of the proposed 20 per cent., is estimated at £60 million, and a taper of 10 per cent., instead of the proposed 20 per cent., would cost an estimated £170 million.
