§ Mr. Flannery
To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many people became unemployed during 1991 in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Jackson
In the 12 months ending December 1991, 4,423,260 people became claimant unemployed, compared to 3,721,914 who left unemployment, leading to a net rise of 701,346 over the year, on the unadjusted basis.
The flow figures will include some people who had more than one spell of unemployment during the year.
