HL Deb 03 February 1992 vol 535 c4WA
Lord Wigoder

asked Her Majesty's Government:

For the last year in which figures are available, what percentage of—

  1. (i) GNP
  2. (ii) GDP
was spent in each of the countries which are the members of the European Community,
  1. (i) on the provision of public health care
  2. (ii) on private health care.

Baroness Hooper

It is estimated that total United Kingdom spending on the NHS in 1991–92 will amount to 5.6 per cent. of GDP, rising to 5.7 per cent. in 1992–93. This compares with a figure of 4.7 per cent. in 1978–79. Spending on private health care in the United Kingdom is likely to account for around a further 1.0 per cent. of GDP.

These United Kingdom figures are not available on a GNP basis, and we do not have comparable figures for other European Community countries.
