HC Deb 03 February 1992 vol 203 cc96-7W
Mr. Patchett

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if he will introduce an over-60s concession card in the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Jack

The United Kingdom, together with all other member states, is currently considering the implementation of a Communitywide over-60s card in accordance with the EC recommendation of May 1989 While the United Kingdom has declared itself in favour of the proposal, if it can be made to work effectively throughout the Community, some countries still have reservations about the scheme. The Department is continuing discussions with officials of the Commission and other member states in an effort to resolve outstanding problems.

I recently wrote to Members of the European Parliament about this matter and I will send the hon. Member a copy of the letter.
