§ Mr. MeacherTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) what humanitarian appeals have been launched by the United Nations in the last six months; what the United Kingdom's contribution has been to each of the appeals; and whether the appeal targets have been met;
(2) what humanitarian appeals are being considered or under preparation in the United Nations for launch in the next three months.
§ Mr. Lennox-Boyd[holding answers 19 November 1992]: The United Nations has issued consolidated humanitarian appeals in the last six months as follows:

The United Kingdom has provided £51.2 million in response to item No. 1 above including £20 million of programme food aid which was excluded from the appeal and £7.55 million, of which £2 million is via United Kingdom NGOs, for the appeal for Afghanistan, item No. 2. The special consolidated United Nations inter-agency appeal for Kenya, item No. 3 was incorporated into the second SEPHA appeal item No. 4 to which the United Kingdom contributed £18 million. This followed a contribution of £23 million in response to SEPHA I earlier in the year. On the appeal for the former Yugoslavia, item No. 5, we have provided £7¾ million in cash and over £14 million in kind and on the appeal for Iraq, item No. 6 £2½ million via the World Food Programme. These figures do not include the United Kingdom's share of EC assistance.
More detailed information on appeals from individual United Nations agencies could not be provided except at disproportionate cost.
We expect to receive shortly a consolidated appeal on Mozambique. The Secretary-General is expected to appeal this month for $6 million to cover costs associated with the remainder of the Cambodian refugee repatriation during 1993.
