Mr. Pope

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what are the functions of the Board of Trade; who are its members; and when it last met.

Mr. Heseltine

[holding answer 7 December 1992]: Under the Order in Council of 23 August 1786, the Board of Trade was appointed to deal with all matters relating to trade and foreign plantations. Its members are the Lord Archibisop of Canterbury, the First Lord Commissioner of the Treasury, the First Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty, Her Majesty's Principal Secretaries of State, the Chancellor and Under Treasurer of the Exchequer, the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and the Paymaster General. The last meeting of the board, which was held to coincide with its bicentenary, was on 21 March 1986.
