Mr. Knox

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security, pursuant to his answer to the hon. Member for Brighton, Kemptown (Mr. Bowden) of 6 November,Official Report, columns 462–65, if he will break down the figures in order to distinguish between the retirement incomes of husbands and wives, single men and single women respectively.

Notes:

1. Estimates are based on data from "Occupational Pension Schemes 1987", a survey by the Government Actuary (HMSO) and the 1988 Family Expenditure Survey.

2. Pension amounts at 1988 levels.

3. Pensioner couples are defined as couples in which the husband is over state pension age. The figures will therefore include some women aged under 60 and exclude some women who have reached state pension age.
