Dr. Godman

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what is the latest take-up figure for family credit in(a) Strathclyde, (b) Scotland, (c) England and Wales and (d) the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Burt

Recent research by the Policy Studies Institute, commissioned by the Department, has estimated family credit take-up in Great Britain 1991 as 70 per cent. by expenditure and 64 per cent. by caseload. Figures broken down by region are not available.

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what estimate he has made of the number of families claiming family credit in(a) Strathclyde and (b) Scotland as a whole which are (i) one-parent families and (ii) two-parent families; what is the number of children in each category of families; and if he will make a statement.

The number of families claiming family credit, as at the end of April 1992, the latest date for which information is available, is as follows:
