HC Deb 01 December 1992 vol 215 c101W
Mr. Mackinlay

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what help was offered to the royal household to meet the cost of additional or alternative fire precautions to Windsor castle, following the fire at Hampton Court and the subsequent publication of the report of the inquiry into that fire.

Mr. Brooke

There have been significant increases in resources for the royal household works programme in recent years to provide for fire prevention programmes at Windsor castle and the other royal residences. The total cost of the programme for rewiring and other works at Windsor castle has been £20 million, including a substantial amount for fire protection.

Mr. Mackinlay

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what advice was tendered to the royal household following the fire at Hampton Court and the subsequent publication of the report of the inquiry into that fire.

Mr. Brooke

The royal household received advice on fire safety from PSA after the Hampton Court fire, and that advice was fully incorporated into the designing of works projects at Windsor castle and other royal residences. The household now employs its own fire consultants.
