HC Deb 21 October 1991 vol 196 c374W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list by location the proposed new sites of high temperature incinerators for dealing with inland toxic waste in England.

Mr. Baldry

Industry could have a variety of such proposals at various stages of consideration. Planning proposals for merchant incinerators of which the Secretary of State is aware are those currently before him for decision:

  • Leigh Environmental, Kirk Sandall, Doncaster
  • Ocean Environment, Seal Sands, Cleveland
  • Northumbrian Water/ITE, Portrack, Cleveland
  • Northumbrian Water/ITE, East Howden, Tyne and Wear

Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list by location for England the current sites of high temperature incinerators for dealing with inland toxic waste.

Mr. Baldry

High-temperature incineration of waste can take place within factory premises, where so authorised, or in merchant plant available for disposal contracts. The merchant incinerators in England are:—

  • ReChem, Fawley, Hampshire.
  • Cleanaway, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.
  • Leigh Industrial Services, Killamarsh, Sheffield.

Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list by location, all the sites where chromium powder and chromium waste is dumped; and what precautions are taken to ensure that it is not(a) inhaled and (b) allowed to come into contact with the general public.

Mr. Baldry

This information is not available centrally. The nature of wastes going into specific landfill sites and suitable operational precautions are matters for local authorities under the licensing provisions of the Control of Pollution Act 1974.
