To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the estimated number of students in(a) advanced and (b) further education in 1991; what were the comparable figures in 1979; and what is the forecast number for the year 2000 at current rates of growth.

In 1979–80 there were some 778,000 students in higher education in Great Britain. As shown in the May White Paper on higher education, Cm 1541, that is projected to rise to 1,221,000 in 1991–92 and to 1,595,000 in 2000–01.
