Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many mentally ill patients in the special hospitals at(a) Ashworth, (b) Broadmoor and (c) Rampton who have not committed offences, come from each health authority region or board in the United Kingdom; and how many from elsewhere.

Mr. Dorrell

The numbers of patients from each region with a diagnosis of mental illness who have not committed offences' are given in the table. The special hospitals provide a service for England and Wales only. Patients from Scotland and Northern Ireland requiring treatment under conditions of maximum security would normally be admitted to the state hospital, Carstairs.
