HC Deb 16 October 1991 vol 196 c168W
31. Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will make it his policy to ban the import of shark products.

Mr. Sainsbury

No. Sharks are not currently recognised as being endangered. Were evidence to be produced that any species of shark was becoming endangered, consideration could be given to controlling the trade under either the convention on international trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora—CITES—or the Endangered Species (Import and Export) Act 1976.
