HL Deb 28 November 1991 vol 532 cc91-2WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are satisfied that the £14 million from the Simple Truth appeal in the United Kingdom, which was allocated to voluntary organisations, has been effectively spent for the benefit of the Kurdish people, especially those injured and displaced by war; and whether any lessons can be learnt for future disaster relief.

Lord Cavendish of Furness

British Red Cross figures show that of the £13,832,000 raised in the United Kingdom, £13,138,000 has been distributed through United Nations and Red Cross agencies, British voluntary organisations and in British Red Cross direct relief programmes. We are satisfied that these funds have been properly used. The sum of £146,000 remains in reserve earmarked for further programmes in Iraq this winter. The difference of £548,000 represents British Red Cross's commendably low expenses.
