HL Deb 25 November 1991 vol 532 c77WA
Lord Braybrooke

asked Her majesty's Government:

Whilst welcoming their success in reducing road casualties, whether they consider that a further reduction could be achieved by introducing a speed limit of 50 mph for all heavy goods vehicles.

Lord Brabazon of Tara

This option was considered and rejected in the speed limit review which was conducted earlier this year.

Lord Braybrooke

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are satisfied that the existing speed limits on motorways adequately reflect the braking capabilities of heavy goods vehicles compared with other road vehicles.

Lord Brabazon

Yes. The legal minimum braking requirement ensures that a properly maintained heavy goods vehicle travelling at 60 mph should be able to stop within the same distance as a properly maintained car travelling at 70 mph.
