HC Deb 21 November 1991 vol 199 cc266-7W
Mr. Beith

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what recent change in prison officers' shift patterns have taken place at Castington youth training centre; what changes there have been to visiting on Mondays and Fridays; and what effect the new shift patterns have had on the number of meals taken in cells.

Mrs. Rumbold

New shift systems, designed to make more efficient use of staff resources, were introduced on 13 October 1991. As a general rule visits are not now held on Mondays and Fridays, because neither day was popular with visitors. Inmates dine in association, but breakfast and tea meals are now taken in cells. This has enabled an earlier start to evening association, which is preferred by inmates.
