§ Mr. Bill WalkerTo ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what is Her Majesty's Government's policy on Taiwan's application to become a member of GATT, in the light of Taiwan's treatment of imported Scotch whisky.
§ Mr. Redwood[holding answer 18 November 1991]: The discriminatory tax treatment of Scotch whisky in Taiwan is unsatisfactory. Relations with GATT are a matter of 213W Community competence and the Community's position on Taiwan's application to accede to GATT is still under consideration. The United Kingdom, of course, takes up the questions important to Scotch whisky with the European Commission and our European partners.
