Mr. Shersby

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the average time take by appeals tribunals considering police discipline measures in England and Wales; and what proportion of recommendations made by them are(a) accepted and(b) rejected by him.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

During the year ended 31 October 1991 it took an average of 14.7 weeks for an appeal tribunal to make its recommendations known to my right hon. Friend. Over the same period my right hon. Friend accepted the recommendations in 30 cases (81 per cent.) and rejected those relating to the level of punishment in 7 (19 per cent.).
