HC Deb 12 November 1991 vol 198 c483W
Mrs. Gorman

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the progress of his rents-to-mortgages scheme.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

The pilot rent-to-mortgage scheme, open to tenants of Scottish Homes and the new town development corporations in Scotland from October 1989, was extended to tenants of Scottish local authorities from 1 April 1991. Information on sales and applications in process, based on returns to 31 October 1991, is shown in the table. Experience of the pilot scheme to date is encouraging. More than 1,000 tenants have already bought their homes under the scheme or are in the process of doing so. The scheme will continue to be closely monitored.
