To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what is his most recent assessment of activity in the building and construction industry; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Yeo

Output rose every year from 1981 to 1990 It fell back during 1990, but still reached a new record level. Output is expected to continue falling in the remainder of this year. However, the first indications of a recovery are now appearing.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what consultations he has had with representatives of the construction industry over the effect the recession has been having on building works.

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State is closely in touch with representatives of the construction industry and frequently discusses this and other matters of interest with them.

Mr. Fearn

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what consultations he has had with the Royal Institute of British Architects over planning for building work over the next six months.

Sir George Young

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State has had no such consultations.
