HC Deb 06 November 1991 vol 198 c180W
Mr. Bellotti

To ask the Secretary of State for Health whether any voluntary donated blood plasma collected in the United Kingdom is used other than to produce plasma fractions or finished products which are used solely for patients in the United Kingdom.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

Our aim is to collect from our unpaid voluntary donors sufficient blood and plasma to meet national requirements for blood products. Not all the products derived from blood and plasma are in equal demand and a surplus of a particular fraction may arise from time to time. Those products which are genuinely surplus to our own needs may then be exported to EC or other countries which may not be self-sufficient in that particular fraction.
