HC Deb 06 November 1991 vol 198 c181W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how much money the Government have put into AIDS and breast cancer research and publicity.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

Government expenditure on AIDS research in 1990–91 totalled £20.4 million. In the same year £10.0 million was spent on publicity on AIDS. In the present financial year, 1991–92, the estimated Government expenditure is £22.5 million on AIDS research and £11.3 million on publicity on AIDS. Government spending on research into breast cancer in 1990–91 amounted to £3.0 million. The estimated figure for research in 1991–92 is not yet available. Information on the levels of expenditure on publicity about breast cancer and the breast cancer screening programme is not separately identifiable. The Health Education Authority, the Department of Health and the NHS breast cancer screening programme include advice and information about breast cancer in a range of publications giving general advice on health matters.

Mrs. Gorman

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what steps he is taking to revise the amount of money his Department spends on AIDS; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

The amount of money available for spending on AIDS and HIV is kept under constant review.
