To ask the Secretary of State for Health what proportion of expenditure by the NHS is raised by public finance in 1991–92, and what was the comparable figure in 1978–79.

Mr. Dorrell

It is estimated that public expenditure will account for 94.3 per cent. of NHS expenditure in England this year. The comparable figure for 1978–79 was 97.5 per cent.
