HL Deb 22 May 1991 vol 529 c11WA
Lord Gainford

asked Her Majesty's Government:

When investigations into alleged war crimes will begin.

The Minister of State, Home Office (Earl Ferrers):

The War Crimes Act received Royal Assent on 9th May and the war crimes investigation unit established by the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis will begin its investigations immediately. Parliamentary approval of this new expenditure is being sought in the Supply Estimates for the Home Office Vote for administration, etc. for 1991–92 (Class IX, Vote 3). Pending this approval, urgent expenditure estimated at £300,000 will be met by repayable advances from the Contingencies Fund.
